Hamburg Art Hall, Hamburg

Located just a stone's throw from the city's main train station, the Hamburg Art Hall boasts three stunning buildings that house one of the most significant collections of art in the whole of Germany.

There is no doubt that the Hamburg Art Hall is home to one of the most important public art collections in Germany. The permanent exhibition of more than 700 works and temporary displays from the museum's holdings offer a unique insight into art from the Middle Ages to the present day. Each of the museum's collections is important in its own right but together they are unbeatable. The masterpieces on display include Medieval paintings, Dutch artwork from the 17th century, German paintings from the 19th century and incredible works of Classical Modernism by the likes of Much, Nolde and Klee.

Temporary exhibitions showcase contemporary art by artists such as Georg Baselitz, Sigmar Polke and Gerhard Richter. Featuring more than 120,000 works, the Department of Prints and Drawings is another museum within the museum. And the three eye-catching buildings that make up the Hamburg Art Hall are an architectural work of art in their own right. Opening times: Tuesday to Sunday: 10 am–6 pm
