The 2,900-kilometre-long German Avenues Route runs like a green ribbon from the Baltic Sea island of Rügen to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Reichenau Island in Lake Constance.

Trees lining the avenues run like a green ribbon through the countryside, with light and shade creating beautiful effects under their dense canopies of foliage. Gnarled linden trees and lush chestnut trees span the roads, whilst oaks with multiple branches, slender birches, giant beeches and well-padded maple trees cast shadows. Fruit trees often line the access roads into the local traditional villages in a style reminiscent of avenues. And avenues are often found in the area surrounding castles and palaces too thanks to the lords' preference for particular plants.

This route takes in stunning countryside scenery that varies depending on the season. Glimpses of glowing yellow fields of rapeseed and corn may be offered up between the trees or the focus may fall onto the trees themselves, as nature transforms their green foliage into a beautiful sea of colours in the autumn months. The German Avenues Route is one of a kind. Not only does it guide visitors to must-see natural wonders and fascinating examples of cultural heritage, it is also a gem in its own right that can be explored by car, by bike or on foot.
