New Hall of the Giants Dresden

The pillar-free Hall of the Giants at Dresden Castle showcases opulent items from the magnificent Renaissance building's armoury, such as tournament and ceremonial weapons, armour and costumes.

For almost 300 years, the hall measuring 57 metres in length and 13 metres in width that was once the setting for courtly celebrations, masked balls and weddings was no more. August III had the space divided up into smaller rooms back in the 18th century and it wasn't until 2013 that the Hall of the Giants was reconstructed with its original dimensions and impressive barrel vault. The hall is named after the images of giants that were originally painted on the posts between the windows.

The Hall of the Giants is now home to at least 400 items, including pieces of armour that would have been used to protect both horse and rider. Then there's the precious ceremonial weapons, lances and swords that reveal so much about various historical tournaments and the pomp and ceremony surrounding the Elector, especially at the Saxon court. Rather than modern animations, reconstructed battle scenes take visitors on a visual journey through time and offer an insight into courtly ceremonies and celebrations. Opening times: Every day except Tuesday: 10 am–6 pm
